1960 Fares
For a bit of fun, here are the fares that you would have paid in 1960 for various journeys on board a Central bus. Choose your starting point and realise what a difference 50 years makes!
For those too young and innocent to know of such things, I should explain that prior to decimalisation, Britain had 12 pence to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. So 2.4 old pence were equivalent to 1p, not allowing for inflation of course, and a shilling was equivalent to 5p. Incidentally the old penny was abbreviated as 'd'.
The language was also very different. One shilling and sixpence (one word, notice) was written 1s 6d (or more commonly 1/6) and normally spoken as one and six. 2d was tuppence (as in "Feed the birds, tuppence a bag..."), ½d was a ha'penny and 1½d amounted to either three ha'pence or a penny ha'penny. 1s 2½d was one and tuppence ha'penny. Got the idea?
Right, then - end of history lesson. Have a look at those fares, taken from the 1960 timetable. Note particularly the special return fares (no through singles!) where no direct journey existed, e.g. Glasgow - Muirkirk or Hamilton - Cleland.
